When HEIC will not open
HEIC is what an iPhone shoots by default. It is half the size of JPG at matched quality, which is great for storage and awkward everywhere else: the stock Windows photo viewer, older Photoshop, government and school upload forms, plenty of forums.
This tool reads HEIC in Chrome and Firefox too. Safari decodes it natively; other browsers fetch a decoder at the moment it is needed. Dragging iPhone photos onto a desktop browser is the most common route into a tool like this, so that path was built for first.
Which format to pick
JPG opens everywhere. Right for photographs, where colour shifts gradually. Cannot hold transparency. When in doubt, JPG.
PNG keeps transparent backgrounds and never smudges text or thin lines. Right for logos and screenshots; on photographs it balloons the file size.
WebP is 25–35% smaller than JPG at matched quality, and it supports transparency. Every browser shipped since 2020 opens it, but older desktop software and some upload forms still refuse it. For images headed to a web page, this is the best pick.
How to use it

Worth knowing
- ⚠️ Capture date and location are lost
- The browser redraws the image and saves it as a new file, and EXIF, GPS and the capture date do not survive that. If the date and location need to stay, this tool is not the right fit. If you were going to strip them anyway, it saves you a step.
- Transparency behaves differently per format
- JPG cannot hold transparency, so transparent areas come out black. WebP keeps it. Pick PNG or WebP if you need a transparent background.
- PNG output can be much larger
- PNG is lossless, so a photograph saved as PNG is often several times bigger than the original JPG or HEIC. Read the resulting size on screen before you save.
- JPG quality is 90%
- Hard to tell apart from the original by eye while keeping the file size in check. WebP is set to match.
